RSMAS Home

The RSOC supporting organization is the USAP prime contractor. The RSOC works through RSMAS to provide interaction for:

  • Planning, coordination, design, development, management, testing, implementation of services
  • Receipt, processing, and implementing service community requests for voice and data communications
  • Sustaining engineering support of items designed for and used by polar region ground stations

At the current time, the RPSC provides management oversight for resource allocation and acceptable use consideration of the RSOC services. It also provides validation of service community requirements, oversight for interagency agreements for access to the Government furnished satellites, and management oversight for all organizational interfaces with RSOC. Requirements and funding to support the RSOC operations are provided from RPSC through the RSMAS. Reports and status are returned on a regular basis for tracking purposes to the RPSC.

To successfully execute the activities and accomplish the RSOC mission, all involved organizations have clearly defined roles and responsibilities:

Service Community
  • Defines and prioritizes research needs and clarifies requirements
  • Uses system for voice and data communication
NSF
  • Designated Federal executive manager for the U.S. national program in Antarctica
  • Identifies and reserves funds for system resource needs
RPSC
  • Functions as USAP Prime Contractor
  • Gathers, discusses, processes, negotiates, and implements science research support requirements for research activities
  • Provides NSF technical representation in all technical reviews
  • Provides operations and technical support services for physical operation of the U.S. Antarctic facility infrastructure and conduct of scientific research in Antarctic regions
  • Oversees and administers telecommunications contract
RSMAS
  • Manages RSOC system acquisition and development
  • Serves as primary management interface to support organizations
  • Provides administrative and software development support
RSOC
  • Provides command and control for GOES-3
  • Manages station for day to day use
  • Provides operations and maintenance functions on all equipment
  • Serves as primary technical interface to service community and supporting organizations
